This past weekend, rapper, Cassper Nyovest took to the timeline to celebrate another accolade following his epic success with #FillUpFNB.
According to Nyovest, he had just been awarded a plaque for selling 10 million units throughout his career. But as soon as some saw this number, they found the declaration hard to believe. Seeing as most of the dissenting opinion came from regular people, their dissent flew relatively under the radar. The same could not be said for one of SA’s most popular DJ’s, DJ Maphorisa who repeatedly asked for clarity on the number as he did not believe the declaration either.
Nyovest’s fanbase was right on time with the disses and the shade as (according to them) no one is allowed to disagree with Cassper Nyovest or question the things he says.
There is a tendency, not just in South Africa, but all over the globe to immediately label someone a hater as soon as they don’t fall in line with the echo-chamber of blind positivity and that is exactly what happened the minute Maphorisa questioned the veracity of Nyovest’s claims.
Regardless of the opposition, Maphorisa remained steadfast in his line of questioning, even getting support from fellow musicians such as Yanga (who is a known affiliate of AKA) as well as DJ Buckz.
He later got clarity after a keen-eyed fan zoomed in to the nameplate on the plaque which revealed that the accolade was for streams and not units sold as initially (and incorrectly) stated by Nyovest.
Maphorisa then took one last jab at Nyovest by alluding to the fact that he still has not been paid for work he did on the Refiloe album which was released back in 2015…
Yikes! It may not be hate but Maphorisa certainly is not feeling the boy.
Cassper has refused to address Maphorisa at all so we guess that's the end of that.
