Male domination has been in existence for years and the entertainment industry of Djing has not been spared the curse as it remains a male-dominated field with females shying away from the profession.
But the 21st century has seen more women rising to the occasion to fight this phenomenon with names like DJ Zinhle breaking boundaries of ‘the boys club’ to become South Africa’s leading female DJ.
The 34-year-old real name, Ntombezinhle Jiyane who grew up in KZN in the small town of Dannhauser says her love for Djing was by default as she eyed an acting career before thinking of spinning the decks.
From being introduced into mixing by her brother who owned a company that hired out sound equipment years back to polishing up her act in the game and becoming the best that the industry has to offer is an amazing inspiration to many.
With notable hits like ‘My Name is’ with Busiswa, partnerships with Kalawa Jazmee Records and several award nominations, Zinhle is doing the most in safeguarding her reign in the world of female DJs.
Amongst many other achievements, Zinhle has also been a great inspiration to many young girls and women who look up to her and wish to follow the same career line.
This prompted her to partner with Nomndeni Mdaki to launch The Firm Understanding of Sound Entertainment Academy (FUSE), a djing academy with a special focus on empowering young females aspiring to be DJs. FUSE has birthed the careers of female DJ's such as the likes of Ms Cosmo.
A DJ, career mom, fashion entrepreneur as she runs Era by Zinhle an online fashion shop, Zinhle is also respected for her involvement in women empowerment initiatives through her inspirational book for women: Meeting Your Power and an empowering reality show‘It takes a village’.
Such initiatives prove the star is all about girl power and supporting each other which we can also see from her inspiring friendship with Pearl Thusi and several other female celebrities who look up to her strength and abilities to juggle a demanding career.
