When we talk about South African celebrities who are doing big things overseas, we shouldn't forget Amalaratna Zandile Dlamini, aka Doja Cat. This week, the rapper and singer was at the heart of a controversial debate after tweeps claimed she was one of the best rappers in the world.
The debate began when Doja's debut album, Hot Pink, dropped last week and people had a lot to say. And, thankfully for Zandi, a lot of it was good! The record has received a lot of love from US reviewers with the notoriously strict Pitchfork even rating it an impressive 7.4 (higher than every J Cole album they've ever reviewed but that's a story for another day).
Things escalated very quickly a few days later when people began to compare Doja Cat to some of the best rappers in the world. Legendary radio star Ebro Darden led the way when he said,
"Doja Cat raps better than your favorite rappers..."
And the internet BROKE. Just look at some of the reactions:
Of course, for every critic there were those who were ready to champion Doja's every move. The likes of Elle Magazine in the USA and a number of other influential figures have hailed Doja's influence on American music:
Do you think Doja Cat needs to be hailed as one of the biggest rappers on the scene right now?
