Police spokesperson Kay Makhubela told NOW officers received a tip-off about that a group of men would try to hijack a truck carrying cigarettes.
“Police conducted an operation to prevent the incident. Yesterday afternoon, they executed the plan and the suspects were arrested. Two of the suspects were found wearing the full uniform of metro police. The suspects were also found in possession of a tracker jamming device,” he said.
Makhubela said police confiscated four vehicles used in the crime.
“They will be charged with impersonating police, possession of an illegal jamming device and planning to commit a crime,” he added.
The former soccer player could not be named as he has not yet appeared in court.
The suspects are due in the Boksburg Magistrate's Court on Friday.
Makhubela said police were investigating how the suspects obtained metro police uniforms.
