Kelly Khumalo and her culinary team reigned as last year’s White Star Celebrity Cook Off winners but this year the title went to the boys, Akhumzi, Musa & Francois Lesley’s team who showed off their culinary skills during the event held this past Saturday in Sun City.
Inviting local celebrities to promote the new White Star Quick maize meal proved to be a successful marketing strategy explained White Star Marketing Manager Mokhele Makhothi:
“There are so many ways in which to prepare maize meal and we wanted to demonstrate to the invited celebrities, professional chefs & guests that with our new product – White Star Quick – it is now even easier to turn White Star into a meal that suits their Lifestyle. From a traditional pap dish to a gourmet meal, White Star Quick can be whipped up in just 2 minutes and still promises the great taste and quality you have come to expect from White Star.
The competition consisted of two teams, each consisting of one professional chef – and allocated to a cooking station. Both teams were provided with a mystery basket (Wait a minute doesn’t this sound like Master Chef?) Anyway, the basket contained ingredients used to prepare a three course meal whilst the competitors frantically cooked up a storm good enough to impress the judges.
White Star Quick had to be included in every dish, even the dessert. “By putting a completely new spin on how to use maize meal, White Star again demonstrated that it is a versatile brand that can fit into our consumers’ busy and modern lifestyles. The cook-off has shown that White Star has earned its own star status,” said Makhothi.
Other celebrities spotted at the event were hunky Isibaya actor Pallance Dladla, Kelly Khumalo and Selimathunzi’s Zizo Beda.
Congratulations to the winners, it’s safe to say that South Africans have now great faith in you when it comes to creating magic in the kitchen.
