Twitter was on fire recently after Mzansi Magic’s popular show Gomora caused a fierce debate that invited media personality, Pearl Modiadie on the scene. When Gomora’s Teddy (played by rising star Sicelo Buthelezi) struggled to pronounce a few English phrases during a school debate, he earned a rain of laughter from his classmates. Then the drama began.

Teddy is a much-loved darling by South African viewers. According to the storyline, Teddy’s mother Zodwa (played by Sana Mchunu) drank heavily while she was pregnant of Teddy and this resulted in him being not smart, failing Grade 9 two years running, struggling with reading and having a poor memory. While she’s a recovering alcoholic, she always reminds Teddy of his slowness.

Gomora’s Wednesday episode caused some arguments for many viewers on Twitter, including radio and television presenter Pearl Modiadie who tweeted: “Can Teddy just be allowed to debate in his home language?#Gomora. I get so upset when people who aren’t fluent in English are made fun of.”

One twitter user replied, “Chill, it an act.” The response was accompanied by a rolling eyes emoji.

Modiadie wasn’t impressed by this response and she retaliated hard. She said, “This is a positive space my babe… we don’t speak to each other like that on this timeline of mine.

“I know it’s a show & art often imitates life and vice versa. Now either you disagree respectfully or unfollow my opinions.”

Some viewers joined the debate by sharing their stories which seemingly agreed with Pearl’s thoughts. “My young brother is exactly like Teddy and I love him, support him because I know he might struggle with Dyslexia but his so good with other things I struggle with.

“Let’s support, courage and love them as much as we can red heart.#gomoramzansi#Gomora,” commented Lusanda Somdaka.
