His address comes after the recent spate of killings against women and children in the country. The president said the county needs to urgently re-examine the effects of alcohol because, several international and domestic studies show clear linkages between alcohol abuse and gender-based violence.
Ramaphosa said it is not alcohol that rapes or kills a woman or a child. Rather, it is the actions of violent men. But if alcohol intoxication is contributing to these crimes, then it must be addressed with urgency.
Rami said as a country we cannot hide men's behavior behind alcohol abuse. The actress said men kill all day and even when they are not intoxicated. She reiterated that swift arrests and harsher punishments, needs to be put in place swiftly to combat gender-based violence.
