Netflix South Africa is back again boasting a new original film, the Silverton Siege, a South African action thriller that’s set to release coinciding with Freedom Day on April 27. This film is an action thriller inspired by real life events in the 1980s South Africa.
The upcoming title released a brand new trailer a few days ago and it teased everything that’s in store for local and international film enthusiasts. By the looks of it, we’re not going to have a shortage of action, thrill, and drama in this film. In addition, it seems like the film has some pretty talented actors who we are all bound to become huge fans of. And, as if hearing all this wasn’t good enough, the movie is slated to arrive very soon, meaning you won’t have to wait too long to see all this action for yourself. It features Thabo Rametsi, Noxolo Dlamini and Stefan Erasmus, and Arnold Vosloo.
In the first trailer released, viewers are introduced to a trio of freedom fighters who get into a collision course with the state after a failed sabotage mission, which turns into a bank hostage standoff. This film is inspired by the real-life incident that sparked the global 'Free Mandela' movement.
Last night, the movie’s cast and filmmakers behind the movie alongside some media industry colleagues gathered at Montecasino for the launch and first official screening of the movie. The red carpet to this event was nothing like any others… it featured a set-looking design with an old police car from the apartheid era and some newspapers and other props which became a necessary detail for guests to play around with during their media photographs and videos. The launch was filled with a star-studded group of thespians from across South Africa.Celebrities and other industry heavyweights that made an appearance at this launch included South Africa’s first lady herself, Tshepo Motsepe, actor and lead Thabo Rametsi, actress and also lead Nambitha Ben Mazwi who came dressed in a red Tomi Rikhotso custom gown, Oros Mampofu, Dumisani Mbebe and Elani Dekker among many. Silverton Siege is a movie directed by Mandla Dube, the same filmmaker responsible for South African pictures such as Tsotsi, The Story of Solomon Mahlangu, As I Am, Kalushi, and Sobukwe: A Great Soul to mention a few.
Mandla Dube said in a recent interview, “Silverton Siege is my strongest work thus far, the hope is that filmmakers from Africa are given more opportunities at decolonizing the narrative of who we are. I also hope that the youth of today can draw inspiration from the Silverton Siege trio, and know that they have the power to change the status quo, and most importantly that their stories matter.”The film also stars Arnold Vosloo alongside several well-known South African talent, including Tumisho Masha, Michelle Mosalakae, and Elani Dekker.
