Nigeria and Poland played out a 2-2 stalemate in an international friendly on Wednesday, but the match in Abuja also became the backdrop for a wider sports diplomacy event at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, where senior figures from government and the diplomatic community came together for a shared watch party.

The gathering took place in the VIP Lounge of the national stadium and brought together top government officials, diplomats, and former players. The watch event was linked to the Nigeria vs Poland friendly and offered attendees a chance to connect in a football setting.

Organisers said the programme was led by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, with Adeyinka Adeboye heading the effort. The event was carried out in partnership with the Polish Embassy in Nigeria.

Dignitaries and former internationals in attendance

Several notable personalities were present at the stadium during the viewing. Among those attending were:

  • Philip Shaibu, Director General of the National Institute for Sports
  • Cornelius O. Adebayo, CEO of the National Agricultural Land Development Authority
  • Senator Gbenga Elegbeleye, Chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League

Ambassadors representing multiple European Union countries also joined the programme. Former internationals Victor Ikpeba, Samson Siasia, and Waidi Akanni were among the ex-players who attended the watch party.

Adeboye frames the event as sport with a purpose

After the viewing, Adeyinka Adeboye said the meeting highlighted how sport can help narrow gaps between nations and cultures. He described the night as more than a football fixture, emphasising the social and diplomatic value of the occasion.

“Tonight was beyond football. It was about friendship, unity, diplomacy, networking, and strengthening relationships through sports. We are happy with the turnout, the atmosphere, and the positive energy we witnessed at this event,” he said.

Adeboye further added that the initiative is consistent with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, pointing specifically to youth involvement, international collaboration, and the expansion of grassroots sports development.

  • Support for youth engagement
