Sultan Agunbiade is the lone remaining Nigerian in the men’s singles draw at the 2026 WTT Contender Lagos after a first-round win over compatriot Matthew Fabunmi at Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall, inside Teslim Balogun Stadium. The victory keeps Agunbiade flying the flag for Nigeria as the tournament progresses in the busy Lagos venue.
Agunbiade’s run has been built from momentum, with his campaign starting in the qualifying stage before he made his way into the main event. He then produced another strong showing against Fabunmi, continuing the form that has marked his breakthrough. The youngster had already sparked excitement among local supporters on Wednesday, when he beat wildcard Afeez Yunus 3-1 to book his spot in the main draw, impressing with accurate shot-making and calm decision-making that quickly made him a fan favourite.
With his latest success, Agunbiade stands to pick up important ranking points that could prove valuable as the season develops. Meanwhile, several other Nigerian players were unable to extend their stays in the competition, with Olajide Omotayo, Taiwo Matti, Muiz Adegoke and Azeez Solanke all eliminated after losing to opponents with more experience from Europe and Asia.
On the other side of the draw, defending champion Anders Lind of Denmark also needed to dig deep to survive his opening match. Lind staged a comeback from two sets down to defeat Frenchman Iulian Chirita in a dramatic 3-2 win. The Danish star, who is looking to become the first player to successfully retain the Lagos title, suggested that the path to the trophy will require careful navigation match by match.
Speaking after the match, Lind said: “The first match in any tournament is always the most difficult. I didn’t feel the game in the first two sets, but I fought back to win. Every match is hard, but step-by-step I will approach each game because the deeper you go, the tougher it gets.”
Lind also highlighted the role of the home support in his comeback, praising the atmosphere at the venue. “The fans here are very important because of their enormous support in every match. They don’t just cheer for local players; they support everyone, celebrating every good shot or point. That energy is very motivating for us,” he added.
With Agunbiade carrying the hopes of Nigeria and Lind determined to defend his crown, the contest in Lagos is set to intensify further, promising more high-stakes encounters as the tournament enters its later stages.
