Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle believes Nigeria is in complete shape to successfully defend its Unity Cup title ahead of Saturday’s final against Jamaica in London.
Nigeria’s route to the final
Nigeria booked its place in the championship match by delivering a 2-0 victory in its semi-final against Zimbabwe, while Jamaica—known as the Reggae Boyz—also won 2-0 against India in their own last-four tie.
With both teams progressing on the back of identical scorelines, the final is set to be closely contested at London’s showdown.
History between the Super Eagles and Jamaica
The meeting will be the third time Nigeria and Jamaica have faced each other in the history of the Unity Cup.
Last year, the Super Eagles lifted the trophy after a dramatic penalty shootout following a 2-2 draw against Jamaica. Moses Simon and Samuel Chukwueze scored for Nigeria during normal time, but Stanley Nwabali ultimately became the standout figure in the shootout.
Chelle on preparation and the possibility of penalties
Ahead of the final, Chelle acknowledged that another penalty decision could be in the cards, while insisting his squad is mentally equipped to handle any outcome.
- Chelle said penalties are a natural part of football and could decide the result again.
- He emphasized his mindset is always focused on winning, regardless of how the match develops.
- The coach pointed to his efforts to establish a winning culture within the team.
- He described the players as young, ambitious, and hungry for success.
- Chelle added that, whatever happens on Saturday, Nigeria is prepared to defend the trophy.
“Penalties are part of football, but my mentality is always to win,” Chelle said. “I have tried to build a winning culture in this team. These players are young, ambitious and hungry for success. Whatever happens on Saturday, we are prepared to defend the trophy.”
