Former Super Eagles head coach José Peseiro has missed out on a potential reunion with Portuguese compatriot José Mourinho after being passed over for a place in Mourinho’s newly formed coaching setup.
Why the Peseiro-Mourinho reunion didn’t happen
Peseiro, who previously worked closely with Mourinho during earlier stages of his career, was widely viewed as one of the names in the running when Mourinho began reshaping his technical staff ahead of what could be a return to top-tier European football.
In the end, Mourinho selected a fresh-look backroom team, bringing in former Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira as one of his assistant coaches.
The new coaching team and the end of speculation
Mourinho’s updated staff also includes João Tralhão, Pedro Machado, António Dias, Roberto Merella and Nuno Santos.
The choices have now effectively put an end to the talk of a reunion between the two Portuguese coaches.
Peseiro’s track record and what the omission means
Peseiro, 63, significantly raised his profile through his time in charge of Nigeria, where he guided the Super Eagles to a runners-up finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
That prior connection with Mourinho was seen by many as a potential advantage in the selection process, but the outcome suggests Mourinho has instead leaned toward a coaching model featuring younger former players as they begin their transition into management.
Peseiro’s next steps
Even with the setback, Peseiro is understood to remain focused on his current position at Saudi Arabian club Al-Ula FC. However, there is uncertainty about his longer-term future after the club fell short of promotion last season.
