Hansi Flick Signs Fresh Two-Year Barcelona Deal Through 2028

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has confirmed he has agreed a fresh two-year deal with the club, including a further option that could extend his stay by an additional season.

The 61-year-old German move comes only days after he delivered a second straight La Liga crown with the Catalan giants, sealing the achievement by watching Barcelona beat arch-rivals Real Madrid 2-0 at Camp Nou on Sunday.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of today’s league trip to Alaves, Flick said he was pleased with the progress and felt the timing was right to keep moving forward.

“I’m very happy, and what I’ve managed to accomplish gives me confidence to keep going for one or two more years,” Flick said.

“Plenty of managers would be content to stay three or four years, yet I believe it’s better at Barcelona to put a limit on it.”

He added that his current agreement runs until 2028, with the possibility of an extension if circumstances remain positive. “At the moment I’m committed until 2028, and if everything goes well, we’ll extend it. It’s been a good arrangement for both sides, and I can tell I’m in the right place.”

Flick also outlined what he wanted to accomplish first after signing the new contract, pointing to Barcelona’s pursuit of a major points milestone in the league this term.

“Our objective is to get to 100 points, and to reach that we need to win all three of our matches,” he said. “We’ve celebrated the title a lot, but now we can focus on playing well again.”

Flick joined Barcelona in the summer of 2024, and over two seasons has added two La Liga titles, a Copa del Rey triumph and two Spanish Super Cups to his record at the club.

While his domestic success has been plentiful, the Champions League has continued to be an elusive target since his arrival in Catalonia, despite having lifted the trophy in 2020 with former side Bayern Munich.

This season, Barcelona’s European campaign ended in the quarter-finals as Atletico Madrid edged them out. Last year, Barcelona fell in the last four after being beaten 7-6 on aggregate by Inter Milan.

“(For next season,) it’s a commitment on our part to aim for the highest level and win new trophies,” Flick said.

“Everyone dreams of the Champions League. We’ve been trying, and we will keep trying. I’m thankful for the confidence to continue.”

Before taking charge at Barcelona, Flick worked as Joachim Loew’s assistant when the pair guided Germany to World Cup success in 2014.

As Bayern Munich’s manager, the Heidelberg-born coach enjoyed two trophy-rich seasons between 2019 and 2021.

He later endured a challenging 25-match spell as coach of the German national team, a run that ultimately ended with him becoming the first manager ever to be dismissed by the Mannschaft.

One year after that, Flick arrived at Barcelona to replace Xavi. Despite the club’s financial constraints, he has still managed to steer the team to success on the pitch.

During his playing career as a holding midfielder, Flick made 139 appearances for Bayern Munich and won four Bundesliga titles.
