Nigeria’s top-ranked fencer, 18-year-old Inkosi Brou, has been named to lead the country’s team at the 2026 World Fencing Championships in Hong Kong, taking place from 22 to 30 July.
Brou’s selection follows a rise in the world rankings to 65th after he reached the quarter-finals at the 2026 African Championships in Abidjan. He will be supported in Hong Kong by Oluwafolayemi Akinyosoye, currently ranked 120th, and 16-year-old Olen Phoenix Zaoku, who sits 507th globally and is the youngest entrant in the men’s sabre discipline, a category featuring 154 fencers.
In the women’s programme, 17-year-old Adebodunrin Thomas will represent Nigeria in the épée event. She is the country’s only female competitor in a field of 174 athletes. Thomas has earned attention as one of Nigeria’s most promising teenage prospects following consecutive appearances at the African Championships.
The World Fencing Championships will be held at AsiaWorld-Expo and are expected to feature more than 1,000 athletes from over 100 nations, making it the sport’s leading showcase outside the Olympic Games.
Coach on Nigeria’s aims
National coach Ibrahim Alogba described the tournament as an important milestone in the team’s development. He said the competition offers another chance for Nigerian fencers to measure themselves against some of the best in the sport worldwide.
“We are excited that our fencers will have another opportunity to test their might against some of the finest athletes in the world. Beyond competition, this is about gaining valuable ranking points and building confidence ahead of the Commonwealth Championships next month. Every member of this team is capable of surprising the world,” Alogba said.
