South African jazz ensemble Kujenga has addressed a major change within its ranks, confirming that one of its key members has exited the project. The group’s update arrives as fans had increasingly been asking questions about its lineup.
In a message shared on Thursday, the band confirmed the departure of co-founder and bassist Zwide Ndwandwe. The announcement framed the move as something made with care, after curiosity from supporters continued to grow.
“Earlier this year, we made the difficult decision to part ways with Zwide,” the group said. “This was not a step taken lightly, but one we felt necessary to protect the values and spirit on which Kujenga was founded. However, please note that the issues have/are being ventilated through the appropriate channels.”
The band also thanked listeners for sticking with them. “Your support has truly been put to anchor, and we are deeply grateful for the love you continue to show. We look forward to building the next chapter of Kujenga together with you.”

Kujenga began in 2017 with four young musicians who simply wanted to make music together. Over time, they evolved into a full-fledged group that, at its current stage, included Owethu Ndwandwe, Thane Smith, Bonga Masola, and Zwide.
Over the years, the band performed across Cape Town in venues throughout the city. They also took their sound beyond South Africa, touring and traveling for shows outside their home borders.
With the departure now confirmed, the group’s future points toward rebuilding its legacy without Ndwandwe. The band’s name—Kujenga—means “to build” or “to create” in Swahili, a theme the ensemble now appears ready to carry forward into its next chapter.
