A proposed rematch between boxing icons Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao has been pushed back with no clear timeline, with Pacquiao’s team in the Philippines announcing the plans have been postponed indefinitely on Friday.
The latest delay comes after an earlier report that a separate Mayweather exhibition scheduled for Greece was scrapped. That cancellation followed efforts by an events business connected to the Pacquiao rematch to pursue a court injunction, disrupting the Greek showpiece.
Mayweather and Pacquiao have been locked in a bitter stand-off in recent weeks, with tensions rising after Mayweather said the highly publicised rematch—first unveiled by Netflix and slated for September—would be treated only as an exhibition. Pacquiao’s camp rejected that position, disputing Mayweather’s characterisation of the bout.
In its Friday statement, Pacquiao’s side blamed the postponement on what it described as “a volatile mix of federal lawsuits, scheduling overbooks, and financial gridlock completely surrounding the Mayweather camp.”
The legal pressure stems from a lawsuit filed by an events company, CSI, against Mayweather last week. CSI is seeking at least $4.65 million, claiming it paid the boxer for exclusive promotional rights related to the Pacquiao rematch. The company also says it is owed money connected to a separate exhibition fight involving former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson that never came to fruition.
Pacquiao’s statement added that, under the current circumstances, the earliest a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight could occur is in early 2027.
It further suggested that matters could change if Mayweather and CSI resolve their internal contract disagreements outside of court. “Should Mayweather and CSI settle their internal contract disputes out of court, promoters will immediately pivot to rescheduling a postponed exhibition between Mayweather and Mike Tyson, tentatively targeting September 12,” the statement said.
Mayweather, now 49, stepped away from professional boxing in 2017, finishing his career undefeated with a 50-0 record.
On Saturday, Mayweather was due to appear in an exhibition against Greek kickboxing figure Mike Zambidis at the Telekon Centre, situated inside the OAKA Olympic Complex in Athens. That bout, however, sat amid growing uncertainty across both potential matchups linked to the wider fallout.
The postponed Pacquiao renewal was widely expected to reignite one of boxing’s most profitable and intense rivalries.
