- A trial and qualification session took place at Teslim Balogun Stadium Gymnasium on Wednesday, June 17 ahead of the Ikeja opener.
State-wide amateur boxing drive
The monthly tournament is built to broaden opportunities for amateur boxers across all five Lagos divisions—Kejia, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island and Epe—while also creating a clear pathway to higher-level competition. Boxing champions emerging from each division will qualify for the end-of-year Governor’s Belt Championship.
LBHF Director David Mohamed described the Ibile Divisional Boxing Championships as a fresh, state-wide amateur initiative aimed at identifying promising fighters and preparing them to represent Lagos at major national meets. Those include the National Youth Games, the National Sports Festival, and the newly introduced Intermediate Games, with Lagos set to host the event in October.
Trials, qualification and December finale
Mohamed said a trial and qualification event was conducted at the Teslim Balogun Stadium Gymnasium on Wednesday, June 17, in preparation for the Ikeja portion of the championships.
He explained that the competition’s concept was developed by LBHF founder Wale Edun, who also serves as president of the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF). Mohamed said the aim is to identify the strongest fighters in each division, who will then go head-to-head in the Governor’s Belt Championship later in the year.
The LBHF director added that the trials were specifically organised to determine who would qualify for the Ikeja Division and, ultimately, who could make it through to the grand finale. He also emphasised that the programme is intended to give every boxer a chance to demonstrate their abilities.
Mohamed further stated that safeguarding the welfare of both boxers and coaches remains a key priority during the event’s organisation. He also noted that the championships are structured so that each division can crown its own champions, who will be backed by their communities as they head into the December climax.
In terms of scheduling, the championships will be staged across Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island and Epe over the next five months, before culminating in the Governor’s Belt Championship in December 2026.
