Nigeria’s Super Eagles may be set to play Kosovo for the first time at senior level after both sides began talks about staging a one-off friendly designed to boost sporting ties, with the proposed fixture still under negotiation.
How the proposal emerged
- Kosovo’s leadership opened discussions for an exhibition match with Nigeria, aiming to strengthen relations through sport.
- The idea was introduced during a courtesy visit by Kosovo’s Deputy Prime Minister, Glauk Konjufca, to the Director General of Nigeria’s National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, at the NSC headquarters in Abuja.
- Konjufca and NSC officials also discussed wider cooperation beyond football, including Kosovo’s willingness to support Nigeria’s development in judo, a sport in which the European nation has achieved notable success on the world stage.
What was said
During the meeting, Konjufca described the friendly as the start of a wider sports partnership between the two countries. He said the plan is to arrange a match between the Nigeria senior national team and Kosovo’s senior national team, while also offering capacity building in judo, highlighting Kosovo’s track record of producing world and Olympic champions.
Status of the negotiations
While both countries have welcomed the proposal, the process is not yet complete. Further talks are ongoing, with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Football Federation of Kosovo expected to settle on key details such as the date, venue and other logistical arrangements before any fixture is officially confirmed.
Why it matters for Nigeria
For the Super Eagles, the proposed friendly would add another high-level test as head coach Eric Chelle continues rebuilding the squad ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Nigeria have recently used international friendlies to evaluate new players, develop better team understanding and preserve their performance against strong opposition.
