Nigeria Taekwondo Federation President and Grand Master Tayo Popoola has hailed the 2026 National Open Trials as a resounding success, pointing to a number of standout prospects who have emerged ahead of key international assignments.
The three-day showcase took place at the multipurpose hall of the Alake Sports Centre in Ijeja, Abeokuta, and drew more than 300 athletes from across Nigeria.
Popoola expressed satisfaction with the level of action throughout the competition, saying the trials demonstrated the breadth of talent available to feed Nigeria’s next set of national teams.
“What we saw at these National Open Trials was impressive. The athletes on display are the building blocks of the teams that will represent Nigeria at future international championships,” she said.
The federation chief added that the event was structured to identify and nurture young practitioners who can develop into world-class competitors. She noted that the federation’s long-range aim is to assemble a national team strong enough to challenge for podium places at major events, including the African Games and the 2028 Olympic Games.
Popoola also stressed the value of the recent Kukkiwon Dan Grading programme conducted in Nigeria, describing it as an important move toward improving the country’s profile on the global taekwondo scene. She thanked the National Sports Commission and its Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, for their backing of the sport’s growth and development.
Finally, Popoola confirmed that Nigeria’s plans for the African Taekwondo Championships in Bamako, Mali are in place for the period from May 29 to June 2, 2026. Selected athletes, including Para competitors, are expected to take part in both Poomsae and Kyorugi categories.
