Politics

The endorsement was announced on Sunday evening, May 17, 2026, during a press briefing at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta.

What the ward leaders said

Speaking for the ward chairmen, Alhaji Olayiwola Olaleye, popularly known as Daris, said the decision came after wide-ranging discussions and an evaluation of Senator Omoyayi’s work during his first term.

Olaleye described the senator’s record as significant in legislative activity, empowerment programmes, and representing constituents at the grassroots level.

“We believe a second term will enable him to consolidate on these achievements and deliver even greater benefits to our people,” Olaleye said.

APC ward chairmen’s backing and who they said supports it

Comrade Matthew Sopade, the state chairman for all APC ward chairmen in Ogun State, co-signed the statement and reiterated that the group is united in its plan to back the senator.

The ward chairmen also said Senator Omoyayi is the consensus figure endorsed by Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun (CON), the top leadership of the Ogun Central Senatorial District, and party stakeholders across the district’s six local government areas—Ifo, Ewekoro, Abeokuta North, Abeokuta South, Obafemi–Owode, and Odeda.

The event was held on the eve of the May 18, 2026 APC senatorial primary, and it concluded with an appeal to party members to rally behind Senator Omoyayi.

The chairmen said that if Senator Omoyayi returns, he will continue working with Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration and Senator Olalekan Solomon Adeola, described as the governorship consensus candidate in Ogun State, as part of efforts to build “a greater Ogun State.”

Signatories and record of the announcement

The address was signed on behalf of the ward chairmen by both Alhaji Olayiwola Olaleye and Comrade Matthew Sopade.
