White Tigers Football Club have once again been crowned champions of the Spires 5-Aside Naija Street Soccer Lagos Island divisional championship, extending their winning run to a third straight season with a 5-2 victory over Greater Tomorrow FC in Saturday’s final at Ikoyi Recreational Park.
White Tigers retain the Lagos Island crown
- White Tigers Football Club won the Spires 5-Aside Naija Street Soccer Lagos Island divisional championship for the third consecutive season.
- They beat Greater Tomorrow FC 5-2 in the final.
- The decisive match was played at Ikoyi Recreational Park on Saturday.
Emmanuel Olom’s coached team put in a commanding performance to keep hold of the title, while Greater Tomorrow FC finished the campaign as runners-up.
Third-place finish decided on penalties
With the medals also on the line, Alphas FC secured third place in the playoff by overcoming Dolphin FC.
- Alphas FC defeated Dolphin FC 3-2 on penalties.
- The teams were level 3-3 after regulation time.
Prize money and individual honours
- White Tigers FC received ₦500,000 for winning the Lagos Island division.
- Greater Tomorrow FC collected ₦300,000 as runners-up.
- Alphas FC earned ₦100,000 for finishing third.
- White Tigers’ Ajo Azeez won the top scorer award, taking home ₦50,000.
- Ajo Azeez scored six goals in three matches.
All three clubs—White Tigers FC, Greater Tomorrow FC, and Alphas FC—will represent the Lagos Island division at the state championship scheduled for November 2026.
Founder outlines growth plans for the competition
Tournament founder Dr. Bankole Alibay described the divisional event as a success and laid out plans to broaden the competition beyond the state level, with hopes of reaching a continental stage.
- Dr. Bankole Alibay said the organisers have “redefined 5-aside football” in the West African sub-region.
- He stated the goal is to make the tournament the most commercially viable competition not just in Nigeria, but also across the continent.
Alibay also indicated that the forthcoming state championship will be linked with the Sports-Meet-Tech initiative, created to develop players with abilities beyond the pitch.
He added that the Spires 5-Aside is intended as more than a football tournament, describing it as a “deliberate propeller of young people to greater opportunities.”
Next stops after divisional championships
Following the conclusion of divisional championships in Ikorodu, Epe, and Lagos Island, the Spires 5-Aside tour will move to additional locations in the coming weeks.
- The competition will next visit Ikeja.
- It will also hold events in Badagry in the coming weeks.
