Wisniewski’s stoppage-time rocket earns Poland 2-2 draw vs Super Eagles

Sports

The Super Eagles had to settle for a 2–2 draw in Poland after Przemyslaw Wisniewski produced a dramatic, long-range equaliser in stoppage time to deny Nigeria a first win on their trip to Warsaw. The international friendly at PGE Narodowy Stadium ended level after Nigeria led through the second half.

Quick facts

  • Nigeria drew 2–2 with Poland in an international friendly at PGE Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw on Wednesday.
  • Wisniewski scored a long-distance equaliser deep into stoppage time to secure the hosts a point.
  • Paul Onuachu converted a penalty to put Nigeria ahead 2–1 after the break.
  • Terem Moffi gave Nigeria the lead in the 23rd minute; Kacper Potulski replied for Poland at the stroke of half-time.
  • Nigeria were without Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.
  • Six changes were made at half-time: Philip Otele, Raphael Onyedika, Zaidu Sanusi, Calvin Bassey, Rafiu Durosinmi and Semi Ajayi.
  • Nigeria’s previous match was a 3–0 win over Jamaica to retain the Unity Cup in London; Poland had lost to Sweden in World Cup qualifiers and to Ukraine in a friendly.
  • The result was only the second senior meeting between the teams; Nigeria won 1–0 in Wroclaw in March 2018.
  • Nigeria play Portugal next Wednesday as part of their European tour.

After falling behind early in the rhythm of the contest, Nigeria took control of large stretches after the interval and looked on course to claim all three points. Paul Onuachu calmly dispatched a penalty to make it 2–1, yet Wisniewski struck again in the final moments, levelling the scores deep into extra time to leave Eric Chelle’s side frustrated.

Terem Moffi had set Nigeria on their way in the 23rd minute, putting the visitors ahead with a first-half breakthrough. Poland responded just before the break, as Kacper Potulski drew the teams level at the stroke of half-time.

With Nigeria pushing hard in the second half, the game appeared to be tilting towards victory. However, Wisniewski’s thunderbolt in the closing seconds shattered Nigeria’s momentum and ensured the friendly finished level.

Team news and changes

The Super Eagles entered the match without key attacking options, including Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman. Chelle responded at the break by making six substitutions, bringing on Philip Otele, Raphael Onyedika, Zaidu Sanusi, Calvin Bassey, Rafiu Durosinmi and Semi Ajayi.

Nigeria also arrived in Warsaw on the back of success in London, where they retained the Unity Cup with a 3–0 win over Jamaica. Poland, meanwhile, had been hit by consecutive setbacks—losing to Sweden in the World Cup qualifying play-offs and then falling to Ukraine in a friendly.

This draw was only the second senior meeting between the two countries. Nigeria had won the previous encounter 1–0 when they met in Wroclaw back in March 2018.

The Super Eagles will now turn their attention to their next test, with a match against Portugal scheduled for next Wednesday as they continue their European tour.
