Idols SA has been the longest-running singing competition in South Africa. It has had a longer run than Coca-Cola Popstars, The Voice and South Africa’s Got Talent. Even if the runs of the aforementioned shows were put together, Idols SA would still have a longer run.

As such, when it was confirmed that the upcoming 19th season is set to be the last, while the news was met with furore by the public, it did not come as a surprise. This is in light of the drastic change in judges as original season one judge Randal Abrahams did not return, and long-standing judge Unathi Nkayi also did not return.
The exits of the two judges was the first sign of the impending end as Somizi might have been considered the numbers puller. But for fans of the show, the consistency of Abrahams and Nkayi was a comfort to many. Now as the show is coming to an end, there are ZAlebs speaking out on their dreams about becoming a judge on the show.
AKA shares his dream of being an Idols judge
Kiernan “AKA” Forbes is currently on the road to the release of his fifth solo studio Mass Country. With the singles he released so far failing to make a noticeable impact as the countdown to the official album releases heats up, it seems that AKA is reverting back to his previous tactics, and that is to rely on tweeting to drum up attention.
Hence his recent tweets was to share how he wished that he had become an Idols SA judge before the imminent end of the show. However, AKA did highlight that the chance to have had a seat at the judging table would only be an added judging credit in his already established judging portfolio.
This is as, in the past, AKA has been the presiding judge on the once popular but since cancelled Hip-Hop musical act reality competition The Hustle and Flow and Master of Rhythm. Therefore, being a judge on Idols SA would not have been a stretch for the acclaimed Hip-Hop legend.
AKA’s tweets come off the back of the ongoing debate on social media on whether or not Idols SA has managed to create superstars. A debate that was started by Y.FM veteran DJ, Ankletap, when he took to Twitter to share his disappointment at the fact and seemingly suggesting that the show should come to an end.
But there was the debate that Ankletap is probably just oblivious. This is as comments cited the likes of Shekhinah and Amanda Black as superstars to have come out of the show.
When Ankletap attempted to suggest that these weren’t winners. Names like Yanga and Musa were names that were thrown into the mix. But it seems that between his followers and himself, Ankletap could not fully explain what he understood as “superstars” with enough pull for him to affirm that they were in actual fact superstars.
