Percy Maimela, who is otherwise known as the artist who draws with salt, has just made history after achieving a Guinness World Record with a piece of art depicting Black Coffee.
Percy has gained internet fame over the past few years with his stunning works of art which are made freehand and usually made out of grains of salt. But this month the artist decided to take a new spin on things when he chose to try and achieve a Guinness record by making a giant portrait of Black Coffee - a DJ he admires and looks up to.
A food-inspired portrait of Black Coffee would only make sense if it was made out of... yup, you got it, actual coffee! As it turned out, his latest art piece was good enough to make 2019 highly coveted Guinness list:
Percy shared his inspiration for creation a larger-than-life portrait of his favourite DJ using coffee granules with Sowetan when he said:
“I am extremely humbled to have achieved a Guinness World Record title doing what I love, art! My favourite medium is using salt for my portraits, however, we thought that it would be most fitting to use coffee granules to create the mosaic of my role model DJ Black Coffee.”
Black Coffee himself congratulated Percy on Twitter where he wrote:
Percy also revealed to the Sowetan that his dream of becoming an artist was even harder to achieve because he wasn't able to study his desired course:
“I wanted to go to varsity to study science because of the system. So I was going to do a more traditional job. Then I realised that art was more for me and I tried to study multimedia but there was no space for me.”
Congratulations to Percy and shout out to the man for flying Mzansi's flag to another great height.
