In December 2022, it was confirmed that Steve Harvey was stepping down as the host of Miss Universe after five years at the helm of the most prestigious beauty pageant in the world. At the time of the news making headlines, South Africans were quick with their suggestions of who would be the apt host of the pageant.
Tweeps are abuzz as calls for our very own IT girls to host the international Miss Universe Pageant. Bonang Matheba is at the forefront for those whom tweeps would love to see hosting the biggest pageant in the world.
However, other scores of tweeps are vouching for Anele Mdoda to take the center stage and host the Miss Universe Pageant. Mdoda is not new to the international stages as recently she hosted the 25th anniversary of The Lion King on Broadway.
But the Miss Universe pageant has since announced who are the hosts set to replace Steve Harvey and South Africans are not happy as they have gone to war with the rest of the world.
Tweeps react to Bonang’s Miss Universe snub
Taking to Instagram recently, the Miss Universe pageant revealed their hosts for the 71st Miss Universe pageant. The main hosts include American broadcaster Jeanie Mai and former pageant queen and Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo. Moreover the backstage commentators were confirmed as Zuri Hall and Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray.
Safe to say, as soon as the hosts were presented, Black Twitter did not waste time taking to the timeline to fight for Queen B*. From tweeps that were suggesting that Matheba would have been a better host than the two chosen former Miss Universes.
There were other tweeps that suggested that even if Matheba wasn’t named as the sole host of the pageant that she would have made a perfect addition with Jeanie Mai and/ or Zuri Hall.
Only Jeannie is the sensible pick. I get the throwing a former Miss Universe in there a bit too. But Zuri could have been replaced with Bonang at very least.. https://t.co/yT1vu9nxof
In light of the backlash, even on the official Miss Universe Twitter handle, where complaints are also thrown at the fact that despite the pageant being “universal,” why is it constantly hosted by American personalities.
You would have chosen Bonang from South Africa if you truly listened. https://t.co/ke2FsPAmB5
You had two spots that gave you opportunity to bring an African host Bonang as the second main host and you chose to recycle someone you were given negative feedback about. Can @TheShadeRoom post this already so the world can publicly address this
As such, the owner of the pageant came out to defend their decision of hosts by sharing that:
“I certainly listen to ALL COUNTRIES, not one in particular. You guys, I mean everyone of you and every country just has to tweet your concerns and comments to me. Then I listen to all nations involved. If I don’t hear from you, how can I interact back? I’m fair to everyone!”
