Culoe De Song is one of the most respected Afro-tech House DJs in the country. In the 2010s, he was a household name which was as popular as the likes of Shimza and Black Coffee. However, while his contemporaries focused on propelling their names to international heights, it seems that the producer-DJ had a calling to answer. A calling which arguably hindered his international trajectory

Culoe De Song as a sangoma

Culoe De Song first revealed his traditional healing journey in July 2021. During an interview with TshisaLive, the lauded Afro-tech House producer-DJ confirmed being a sangoma by stating that, “My gift with music is a part of the journey of connecting with my ancestors...considering that music is a part of my calling...So everything about the journey I am on and music, comes under one bag of gifts. The gift of healing.”

He went to add that, “I've had people come to me saying that my music healed them from suicide and things like that...and at the time I was just operating from a talent point of view. I did not know that there was anything special in me...I did not look at music as a form of healing.”

Culoe De Song resurfaces with Smirnoff’s Shaya Ingoma winner

While Culoe De Song is still traveling the world as a renowned DJ, we do not get to see many sightings of him in South Africa. Therefore, it was heartwarming when he resurfaced in Durban this past weekend.

Labeling it one of the “dope” weekends he has had.  Culoe also made the dreams of up and coming DJ, Rosetta Deep come true.

Rosetta Deep is the winner of the Smirnoff  Shaya Ingoma competition. A competition that was premised on:

“Over the last few years, Mzansi has unearthed some phenomenal female DJ talent who are flourishing in their own right; however, the opportunities, paycheques, media exposure, and gigs for female DJs remain limited especially compared to their male counterparts.

In this light, Smirnoff 1818 launched its first ever Shaya Ingoma campaign in 2021, through which the
brand aimed to pioneer the gender gap and shine a light on some talented local female DJs,
promoting them and offering various opportunities for upcoming female DJs in Mzansi to showcase
their skills, get the recognition they deserve and receive sufficient support in the pursuit of their
DJing career aspirations.

“In line with this campaign and ahead of the hotly anticipated Durban July (02 July 2022) event, Smirnoff Vodka, the largest vodka brand in the world-renowned for its ultrasmooth vodka and classic taste, has compiled a playlist featuring the top 10 songs from the best up and coming female DJs that will act as smooth musical accompaniment to your next trip down to Durban.”

Rosetta Deep won the competition through her impressive playlist, earning the opportunity to rub shoulders with Culoe De Song, along with other prominent figures in Durban. Moreover, through Smirnoff Rosetta was able to make some of her dreams come true this weekend. The up and coming talent was able to play a set in the Fact Durban Rocks marquee. A marquee which is owned by the authority of Durban music culture, DJ Tira.
