The moment South Africans have been waiting for is finally here! Global Citizen has finally started counting the points amassed for actions taken on the Global Citizen platform in order to determine which lucky citizens to gift with tickets to the South African leg of the Global Citizen Festival.
Set to take place at FNB Stadium on 2 December, 2018, the festival's line up boats the likes of Beyonce, Jay Z, Ed Sheeran, D'Banj, Cassper Nyovest, Femi Kuti, Pharrell Williams and more. The festival is being staged by the Motsepe Foundation and the foundation's founders, Patrice Motsepe and Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe are billed as the event's executive producers.
According to the official Global Citizen website, you will need to earn a minimum of 23 points to be eligible for the ticket draws and you have until 17 September to earn enough points to enter the first draw. There will be a few more draws in the weeks leading up to the main event and you will need to earn a different number of points in order to qualify to be entered into the draw.
Winners will have 72 hours to claim their tickets after being notified.
“If you didn’t win a ticket, you can keep taking action to earn enough points to enter the next ticket draw, which starts the next day, and you can keep entering the draws until you win,” explain the event organisers via the official website.
Actions include anything from tweeting, signing petitions or sending an email to express your support for a particular issue to offline actions and community service later on.
South Africa's favourite son, Trevor Noah will serve as the event’s official host and he will be joined by the likes of Dave Chappelle, Nomzamo Mbatha, Naomi Campbell, Sir Bob Geldof, Gayle King, Bonang Matheba, Tyler Perry and Forest Whitaker as co-hosts throughout the event.
Famous faces such as K Naomi, Lucas Radebe, Nandi Madida, Pearl Thusi, Somizi, and Zakes Bantwini will form part of the event as 'Global Citizen: Mandela 100 Advocates' to support the campaign against extreme poverty.
The Mandela 100 campaign hopes to raise $1 billion in global investments for the most marginalised communities in the world, with $500 million to be set aside to impact the lives of 20 million women and girls globally. The festival’s seven Global Goals include tackling poverty, hunger, health issues, education challenges, girls and women issues, water and sanitation and ocean pollution.
