Ernest Nkosi's directorial debut has been selected as the SA entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category.

Stand up comedian Mpho Popps took to Instagram to share his excitement about the big news.

“Our Movie Thina Sobabili has been selected to represent South Africa at the 88th Academy Awards AKA The Oscars!!! When I got the news I was so stoked I ran up and down the street in Greenside screaming. By far the best news I've gotten this year!!! I'm super proud of our team,”  he said.

The movie is not officially nominated in the category and is one of dozens of entries submitted from around the world.

The Academy Awards selection committee will announce in January 2016 which five movies will be finalists for the Oscar.

Thina Sobabili tells the story of two siblings trying to build a life for themselves after tragedy.

“Thulas will do anything to protect his sister Zanele after witnessing her abuse as a child. As a result of this the two have a very strained relationship. Zanele falls for the charms of an older man, Thulas is determined to put an end to this relationship,” a synopsis of the film reads.
