"It's one thing that I'm really proud of myself for actually doing considering how long it took."
Growing up, Mihlali was always a skinny kid.
"Growing up I was always the skinny kid. Even as a baby I hated food. I had no appetite, my parents used to force me to eat. There was a time when apparently my mom left for town and when she came back I still had food in my mouth," she continues.
"I was always tiny and I never struggled with my weight growing up. I actually wanted to gain weight when I was in high school because I was insecure about how skinny I was. Especially at the beginning of high school.
And then I became insecure about my hips because I felt that they were too wide. I've always had hips and I was like 'why are these things here. Back then an athletic body was found more visually appealing."
It was when she got to university that she started embracing her body.
"And then I got to varsity and I loved myself. I loved my body, I loved my curves I just loved every inch of myself."
She says she started gaining weight in 2018. This was the same year she lost her father.
"I started gaining weight in 2018. I remember I was going through a lot. I had just lost my dad, I was going through a terrible break-up - like I was just a mess. I was going out a lot more, I was drinking a lot more. I gained weight.
"In 2020 when I was wearing the black dress for my birthday, I think that was the biggest I had ever been in my life. Maybe at the time, I had gained weight I was very content with who I am. My confidence levels were very high," she adds.
She didn't hate her body but "hated the inconveniences that came with gaining weight.
"For example, if you've been a certain size your entire life there are certain shops that you go to. Those little things made me hate my body a bit more. Even things like going to shoots and stylish sourcing dresses for me that didn't fit - made me hate my body even more and the people on social media.
"Sometimes I'd look in the mirror and I'd hate my cellulite. Even when I was at my smallest I had cellulite. I've had cellulite my entire life."
She then addresses different body types and self-love. Check out the full video below.
