The legendary Israel Zulu recently joined Gomora Mzansi and opened up to Daily Sun about what his new role entails.
“I’ll be playing Don. He had a relationship with Zodwa, played by Sannah Mchunu, and they had Teddy. He dumped Zodwa for a rich woman and went to live in mansions. Unfortunately, the woman recently died,” he told the publication.
“Now he’s down and out as the wife’s family took everything and he has returned to Alex. He’ll come back with his daughter Sibongile. Don will also be competition for Mam’Sonto, played by Connie Chiume.
"He struggles a lot after returning and ends up getting into hijacking. Soon he starts taking over Sonto’s operations," he said, adding that people will love him and his sense of humour. Don is coming to take over but people will love him because he’s funny. There will be sadness, sorrow, action and more importantly, drama, “said the legend.
Sicelo’s talent and hard work have not gone unrecognized. In September 2020 he walked away with the Outstanding Newcomer Award at the Royalty Soapie Award. He was nominated alongside cast member Siphesihle Ndaba and The River’s Thembinkosi Mthembu.
During his heartfelt acceptance speech, he thanked everyone who has been instrumental in his success.
"First of all, I’d like to thank the man above. I’d like to thank my mom for supporting me. I’d like to thank my sister; I’d like to thank my little brother. I’d like to thank the cast; Mazet (Siphesihle, you’ve been the best friend that I have met in this set bruh). I’m so grateful. Ntobeko Sishi Ngiyabonga njayam. I’d like to thank everyone, who’s been very supportive. Every veteran that has welcomed me with warm hands. The make-up team, Nyibonga ka khulu bafwethu. Said Sicelo.
Upon receiving his accolade, Buthelezi took to social media to reflect on how far he’s come.
“Last year during this time, I was sitting at a rehearsal room at The Market Theatre Laboratory not knowing what I’ll be doing after my graduation day... I set there alone watching others plan their stuff and I thought to myself “I may not know what I’ll do next year, but I know for a fact that God will guide me”, look at me now 🥺 an Award with my name on it wow!”
