The Queen Mzansi
Topping the list is the Ferguson films production, The Queen that first premiered on our screens in 2017. With over a million views this year, this telenovela is drama packed and features two high end families intertwined in endless criminal activities.
The soapie which is currently on it’s 6th season is a must watch and streams on Mzansi Magic everyday from 9pm.

Gomora
It was not that long ago when this M-Net production graced our screens. And while many battled as to whether or not the soapie would last a long time, there is no denying that we have enjoyed watching the never ending drama between some of our favourite actors and actresses.
The love triangle between Zodwa, Bongani and Don is what has been keeping us glued to our screens from one plot twist to the next. It was very unfortunate that one of the main characters, Israel Zulu revealed that he was leaving the show due to some health challenges.

The Wife
Showmax’s first telenovela, The Wife premiered not too long ago and became an instant hit immediately. The 40-episode first season is based on Dudu Busani-bestseller Dube’s HlomuThe Wife and follows a journalist (Mbalenhle Mavimbela from Skeem Saam) who falls in love with a cab driver, Mqhele (Bonko Khoza from Neckie Youth), not realizing that when you marry a man, you marry his secrets.

Blood and Water
This is yet another local drama series that has continued to receive a lot of rave reviews ever since it premiered on Netflix. The series, which was just renewed for it’s second season, features the lives of Parkhurst High school students. The series, stars some of Mzansi’s favourite Zalebs and even though the episodes are few, there is no denying that it remains a must watch for many.

The River
The River is a South African telenovela that follows two Pretoria families, The Dlaminis and The Mokoenas, as they are drawn together and split by the finding of a diamond in Cullinan. Sindu Dlatha, who plays Lindiwe Dlamini, Larona Moagi, who plays Tumi Mokoena, and Lawrence Maleka, who plays Zolani Dlamini, are just a few of the well-known actors and actresses in the group.
It was not long ago that it was renewed for it’s 5th season and fans couldn’t be more excited at this news.

Skeem Saam
Skeem Saam has been acclaimed as the best soap opera on television because of its strong and authentic plot, which reflects South Africans’ daily lives. The SABC 1 blockbuster soapie premiered in October 2011 and continues to be a smash!
Just recently, the soapie was celebrating ten years of being on our screens and boy oh boy we cannot wait to see what they will bring us in the new year.

Generations: The Legacy
Mfundi Vundla authored and produced Generations: The Legacy, a South African telenovela. It’s a remake of the Vundla-created and-produced soap opera Generations, except with more and different characters, other locales, and various tones. Between December 2020 and January 30th, 2021, it received up to six million views.

Uzalo
Uzalo is a South African soap opera that airs on SABC 1. Between December 2020 and January 30, 2021, it remains the most watched tv drama, with millions and millions of views. There had been reports that the show would be cancelled, but it was renewed for three years, ensuring that it would continue to air until 2023. Gugu Gumede, Masoja Msiza, Wiseman Mncube, and others are among the cast members.
