The South African Idols has had a good and successful run for 19 seasons which spanned for exactly 21 years. However, this singing competition has recently been reported to be on its last season this year (2023). And although scores of fans and viewers of the show were shocked at the news, in the same breath, some viewers welcomed the cancellation with open arms.
Entertainment commentator Phil Mphela broke the news on Twitter, saying it is a long overdue decision. He also pointed out how the numbers kept on declining over the years but said they performed well overall.
"Reaction: Long overdue. But, we have to honest about one thing. Viewers fatigue? Absolutely. Rating drop? Well it’s more nuanced. Yes the show dropped in numbers but so did DStv in general. The show still performed relatively well though not as great as years past. At some point in the latest seasons, yes the show haemorrhaged numbers but it would also bounce back in subsequent episodes. I think out of viewers excitement & prestige not being great, the other main motivation to bow out is likely profitability — sponsors & ad buys," he added.
As a result, a robust conversation have taken on social media where tweeps are questioning the real impact that Idols SA has had on some of it winners over the years. Evidently, it is always the runner ups who are more successful than the actual winners, as the likes of Musa Sukwene, Amanda Black and Lloyiso are some of the thriving artists to have come out of Idols SA.

What happened to Norma, Vincent Bones, luyolo and many other winners on the show ?" wrote Jabulani MacdonaldSome viewers are suspecting contracts that the winners enters to with the record label, whilst some think that it is all about money.
