The tranquil Underberg farm on which the annual Splashy Fen Music Festival is held will soon transform into a colourful tent town when thousands of people from around the country descend on the southern Drakensberg this Easter (28 March to 1 April) for a long weekend of great live music in a spectacular mountain setting.
Included on the bill for Splashy Fen #24 are the likes of Mi Casa, Gazelle and inviZAble, The Muffinz, Gangs of Ballet, December Streets, The Ard Matthews Affair, Desmond & The Tutus, Matthew Mole, Dave Ferguson, ISO, Anton Cawthorn-Blazeby, City Bowl Mizers, Veranda Panda, Dan Patlansky, Josie Field and Laurie Levine, among many others.
Expect a multi-genre line-up of close to 100 of the country’s hottest acts, top-class sound and lighting, as well as side-splitting stand-up comedy, a vibrant craft market and retail area, plus loads of exciting food and drink outlets offering everything from Chinese and Indian cuisine to potjiekos, pizza, pasta, shwarmas, smoothies, speciality coffees and authentic vegetarian meals.
New this year is late-night ‘silent disco’, as well as the Red Bull Water Wings river stage, where festival-goers can float along on their tubes and lilos while listening to some cool sounds. And if you’re feeling adventurous, you’ll also be able to book your seat on a helicopter for a bird’s eye view of Splashy and the stunning local scenery.
Camping for the entire four-night, five-day festival is included in the ticket price. Another option is a new on-site ‘tent motel’ (www.heartbreakmotel.co.za) offering a more glamorous camping experience with all the comforts of home! There is also a separate family campsite, which is the ideal spot for festival-goers with young children, as well as a Children’s Centre which offers fun activities and an evening child-minding service.
Supported by Tourism KwaZulu-Natal, Splashy Fen has been going strong since 1990 and is one of the premier live music showcases in the country.
Advance tickets cost R575 at Computicket. Children aged four to 11 pay R125 and children under four get in free. For more information and the full line-up, visit www.splashyfen.co.za or contact 031 563 0824.
