South African romantic comedy Fanie Fourie's Lobola recently won the Audience Choice Award for Best Comedy at the 19th Annual Sedona International Film Festival in Arizona. We sat down with Zethu Dlomo (who plays Dinky Magubane in the film) for an exclusive interview. Here’s what she had to say…
Will the Cast of Fanie Fouries Lobola be touring the country soon to promote the film?
Wow, I wish we could do that. To be honest I have no idea, nobody has informed us about doing a possible tour around the country but if we do that would be fantastic.
Has your family watched the film and if so, what was their reaction to your on screen interracial romance?
They haven’t watched it yet. My sister and her husband will be watching it this coming weekend and as for my parents, I have no idea when they’re going to go watch the film but I’d like them to watch it on the big screen and not when it comes out on DVD. Another thing is that I don’t want them to watch it with me; it’s just going to be so awkward when it comes to the intimate scenes! Funnily enough in all my roles I’m kissing someone so I’d like to avoid being in the same room with them when they do eventually see it…
What was your reaction when you heard that Fanie Fouries Lobola had won Best Comedy at the Sedona International Film Festival?
Dude, I was over the moon! I was so excited because I was in the middle of another interview (which was via Whatsapp) and everything just stopped for like a good 10 minutes because I started having a screaming session with my mom. So I was really excited and proud because it means audiences from all around the world are really enjoying the message that we’re trying to convey in this film.
You’re known to be quite a proud Zulu girl, did you teach Eduan (Who plays Fanie in the film) any hilarious Zulu pick-up lines?
(Laughs) No I didn’t teach him any of that. We really didn’t speak about those kinds of things but we did discuss the strong similarities between Afrikaans and Zulu people. For example, both cultures love having braais - we love meat! We really just laughed at how much Zulus and Afrikaans people have so much in common...
ZAlebs has heard that you’ve got a bit of a crush on local actor Fana Mokoena. Would you….
YES! You don’t even need to finish the question I’d love to act alongside Fana it would be a dream come true!
