It has been almost a month since the assassination of Kiernan Jarryd “AKA” Forbes and his friend Tebello “Tibz”Motsoane. The two friends were gunned down outside the Wish restaurant in Durban in the late hours of Friday, 10 February 2023.

An assassination which was recorded through the CCTV footage outside of the restaurant. As such, many of his fans and the general public believed that it would make things easier for the South African Police Services (SAPS) to find out who was behind the assassination.

Moreover, as it was reported that the SAPS had their top cop investigating that matter. As reported at the time:

Reportedly, Police Minister Bheki Cele has appointed an award winning cop to lead Kiernan 'AKA' Forbes murder investigation. This comes after both AKA and his friend Tebello ‘Tibz” Montsoaneshot to dead outside an establishment in Florida Road, Durban, last week.

He has since apologized for skipping Kiernan 'AKA' Forbes funeral over the weekend. However, Police Minister Bheki Cele is fighting tooth and nail, day in and day out to bring justice for the slain rapper and his former manager.

According to Zimoja Lezinto, Minister Bheki Cele has appointed Brigadier Vela Cele, the very same top cop that put Uyinene Mrwetyana's killer behind bars. Mrwetyana was a student at the University of Cape and was raped and murdered by Luyanda Botha at Clareinch post office, Cape Town, back in 2019.

However, in light of the recent update on the assassination case, it seems that the SAPS are nowhere closer to having an official arrest on the case.

Apparently there is progress on Kiernan “AKA” Forbes’ case

As the public and AKA’s fellow ZAlebs have continued to call for Justice for AKA. They have taken to social media with the hashtag in order to continue bringing awareness to the fact that his case is still unsolved. A fact which means that time is of the essence as more time passes, the fewer chances to find the culprits.

Therefore, Minister of Police Bheki Cele recently gave an update on the progress being made on the case, and it was not promising. This is as Cele was quoted as sharing the only progress being made on the case as:

“Maybe (there are) things I am not meant to say. But one of them (that I) can say, we have collected many cellphones that were working, download and all that kind of thing, trying to patch and knit things together. That is the last I received yesterday (Monday, 6 March 2023).”

Moreover, he asserted that this was not much and the progress is not happening as quickly as they had intended.

This is as the information he has given is no different from the initial briefing on the investigation when it was shared that the first point of the protocol in the case was:

Cellphone records, ballistic reports, videos, and statements are currently being collected in finding the killers of rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes and Tebello “Tibz” Montsoane who were gunned down outside a restaurant on Florida Road in Durban. The two were shot dead after an embrace and were ready to go their separate ways,” According to Zimoja Lenzinto.
