When they were in their prime, local newspapers thrived on creating controversy between Brenda Fassie and Yvonne Chaka Chaka. It was a “battle” that went on for years but was never actually confirmed by either party. In light of us commemorating 10 years since Brenda passed away last week, there were some fans who wanted to know if the two have buried the hatchet- or if there was any hatchet to bury in the first place.
According to The Citizen, Yvonne Chaka Chaka quickly dismissed the mythical beef that has been circulated by the press for years.
“I loved being compared to Brenda, she was my idol, she started singing years before me. When I was still in school, everybody was listening to Brenda, so I knew I wanted to follow in her footsteps” – She told The Citizen.
Yvonne continued to praise Fassie as a “generous musician” who enjoyed entertaining the masses. What resonated with us was when Yvonne mentioned that Brenda was truly the people’s champ and South Africa’s one and only superstar. Have you ever seen Brenda’s Matshidiso video montage and the pandemonium she would cause not only in South Africa but in the rest of Africa too? Which other local artist can cause such frenzy solely on their own without any other supporting acts? Don’t worry we’ll wait for an answer!
