DJ Tira is questioning whether he should retire after a bottle was thrown at him while he was performing at the University of Venda at the weekend.

"A sign for early retirement maybe... my safety comes first," he wrote on Instagram.

The DJ was one of the performers at a party hosted by the university's SRC. Heavy K and Master KG were also on the line-up.

The crowd was danging and singing along to DJ Tira's mix when a bottle flew from the crowd and landed on his turntable.

Tira shared a video of the shocking moment on Twitter.

“Traumatic experience this morning at University of Venda,’ he tweeted.

One Twitter user shared another angle of the incident, claiming the bottle barely touched him.

But it was clear DJ Tira got smacked in the face with the bottle.

The 42-year-old shared a picture showing an injury below his left eye.

Many of the DJ's fans were appalled by the incident.

“People should know that @DJTira Khathi is [the] Greatest Pioneer of SA music. He deserves the [utmost] respect from us as a Nation. As a business person, and a family man. Most importantly as a human. This incident was uncalled for,” one wrote.

In the midst of all the drama, one Twitter user attempted to start the “DJ Trial Challenge”.

The tweep shared a picture of a man with a fake injury on their face.
But sanity prevailed and nobody else appears to have taken up the ridiculous challenge.
