Ahmed Musa, the former captain of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, has donated two million naira to members of the country’s Under-20 national team, the Flying Eagles, as preparations ramp up for the WAFU B U20 Championship in Côte d’Ivoire from 26 July to 9 August.
Musa, Nigeria’s most-capped international footballer with 111 appearances, delivered the financial support to the team’s players—who are twice FIFA World Cup silver medallists—via the squad’s coordinator, Alhaji Abubakar Abubakar. The forward previously made his mark at the FIFA World Cup finals in 2014 and 2018, scoring four goals across two appearances.
The ex-Nigeria captain also urged the young players to stay disciplined and fully focused ahead of the upcoming competition, where the WAFU B representatives for next year’s Africa U20 Cup of Nations will be decided.
Speaking as a 2013 AFCON winner and a former Flying Eagles player who lifted the Africa U20 Cup of Nations with the team in South Africa in 2011, Musa emphasized that the real foundations of a professional career are laid at U20 level. He noted that performances at this stage can shape how far a player progresses in the game.
In response to the gesture, Flying Eagles captain Simon Habila thanked Musa on behalf of the squad and assured him that the players are putting in the work. Habila also expressed confidence that the team will deliver results and make Nigerians proud at the tournament.
