Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen said he returned home on Monday and is recovering well with his family after collapsing on the pitch during Sunday’s friendly international against Ukraine.
In an Instagram post, Eriksen explained that the shock delivered by his implanted cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) has had a major effect on him and those close to him, while stressing it was a separate incident from the one he experienced in 2021.
“I am feeling good, and my recovery has already started,” he added.
The 34-year-old playmaker sparked immediate concern when he clutched his chest and fell to the ground in the 65th minute of Denmark’s match against Ukraine in Odense, Denmark.
Sunday’s collapse was the second time Eriksen has gone down while representing his country.
Earlier collapse and return to football
- In 2021, Eriksen collapsed during Denmark’s first European Championship group match against Finland in Copenhagen.
- He received life-saving CPR treatment at the time and was later fitted with an ICD device designed to deliver heart-starting shocks if needed.
- After recovering, he returned to play, continuing his career at both club level and for the national team.
