Ghana’s Black Stars were unable to reach the knockout phase, falling to a single strike from Colombian winger Jhon Arias that condemned them to elimination. The only goal came early, as Arias converted a chance created in the opening exchanges to secure progression for Los Cafeteros.
A tempest of pressure followed for Ghana on a hot evening at Arrowhead Stadium, with Colombia doing the controlling and creating the clearer moments. Arias’s breakthrough arrived after a sharp delivery from Luis Suárez, setting the tone almost immediately and ultimately delivering Colombia’s place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup.
With the win booked, Colombia now turns its attention to its next match against Switzerland, scheduled for Tuesday in Vancouver, British Columbia. That game will decide who advances to the quarterfinals.
Colombia’s evening also featured an early injury scare that forced a tactical response. Just minutes into the contest, forward Jhon Córdoba appeared to be struggling with a groin issue, prompting head coach Néstor Lorenzo to make an early change by sending on Suárez as a substitute.
The replacement made an instant impact. In the 14th minute, Daniel Muñoz released Suárez with a pass, and Suárez drove the ball across the face of goal. Arias was on the spot to redirect it past Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi, giving Colombia a 1-0 advantage that they carried through the match.
