Portugal and the Democratic Republic of Congo played out a 1-1 draw in their opening Group K match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with both teams taking a share of the spoils in a tight, closely fought contest.
Portugal made the brightest start when João Neves scored in the sixth minute, calmly finding the back of the net to give the Europeans an ideal early advantage.
From there, Portugal controlled significant stretches of the game and created chances that could have pushed them further ahead, but they couldn’t convert their pressure into a second goal.
DR Congo, however, stayed resolute and made their way back into the match just before the break. Yoane Wissa levelled matters in the 45+5th minute, striking late in first-half stoppage time to restore parity and ensure the Leopards left with a crucial point.
Discipline also played a part in a match that stayed competitive throughout. Portugal were shown three yellow cards, while DR Congo received one booking during the encounter.
The draw means both sides sit on one point in Group K as they continue their respective campaigns, each still chasing a position in the knockout rounds of the tournament.
