Substitute Mikel Merino struck a late winner as Spain edged Portugal 1-0 to reach the quarter-finals, handing Cristiano Ronaldo a heartbreaking end to his World Cup journey on Monday.
Spain, the European champions, will now travel to Los Angeles for their next match on Friday, where they will face either the United States or Belgium, with the Americans the only remaining co-host nation still in the tournament.
At a packed, air-conditioned venue at the home of the Dallas Cowboys, 70,649 spectators watched a contest that looked far more commanding on paper than it proved in reality.
Extra time appeared to be looming until the final stages, when Ferran Torres slid Merino through and the substitute finished to settle the match in the opening minute of added time.
For Ronaldo, the 41-year-old who is currently playing his club football in Saudi Arabia, it was a bitter conclusion to a campaign that had already been framed as his last. He had told the world on the eve of the game that this would be his final appearance at football’s biggest tournament.
Both teams arrived unbeaten, but their tournament records told different stories. Portugal had not been entirely convincing, yet Spain had been even more impressive defensively, having not conceded a single goal in the competition so far.
Despite their reputation and pedigree, Spain have won the World Cup just once, in 2010, while Portugal’s best finish remains third place, achieved in 1966.
Ronaldo and Spain’s 18-year-old Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal gave the last-16 tie a marquee feel, billed as a clash between two exceptional players at opposite ends of their careers.
Before kick-off, there was a subdued scene when a black-and-white tribute image of the late Portugal forward Diogo Jota appeared on the giant screen above the pitch.
Key moments
- Within the first 10 minutes, Spain came close when Dani Olmo fed Mikel Oyarzabal, but with goalkeeper Diogo Costa the only player to beat, the effort drifted well wide.
- Ronaldo, having already scored three goals in North America during the tournament, created a chance to add to his tally, forcing a strong stop from Unai Simon with a shot from a tight angle.
- Spain then increased the pressure, with Yamal and Alex Baena testing Costa in quick succession, the second effort turned away by an excellent fingertip save.
- Ronaldo spent long spells in the central attacking role he has taken in recent stages of his career, and he received a mixed reaction from the stands, audible boos and cheers alike.
- Portugal closed the half on top and were moments away from taking the lead when Spain defender Pedro Porro redirected a Nuno Mendes attempt onto his own crossbar.
- Yamal had already been dealing with Mendes, but the situation worsened for Portugal when Mendes was forced off injured after 56 minutes.
- The match needed a lift, and Ronaldo reacted with visible frustration when a pass went astray, throwing his arms up as the chance slipped away.
- Roberto Martinez made further changes with double substitutions on 71 and 83 minutes, but kept Ronaldo on the field.
- With the game largely controlled in cautious fashion, Merino ultimately provided the decisive breakthrough at the death, finishing calmly in a way that contrasted with the pattern of play.
