Senator Adeola won a commanding victory in the ruling party’s governorship primary, securing 304,055 votes to defeat rival contender Mr. Abayomi Hunye, who received zero votes in the ballot conducted across the state.
The contest unfolded after Hunye had earlier argued that he should still be allowed to take part, despite the fact that Adeola was adopted as the APC’s consensus candidate by a majority of party stakeholders, leaders, and Governor Dapo Abiodun.
Announcing the outcome at the APC secretariat in Abeokuta, the chairman of the Governorship Primary Election Committee, Mr. Wale Ohu, said the party had 343,292 registered voters, while 305,287 members were accredited to participate in the exercise.
Ohu explained that there were two contestants in the primary. “Senator Solomon Adeola scored 304,055 votes while Mr. Abayomi Hunye polled zero votes,” he said, adding that the results confirmed Adeola as the victor. He then declared, “With these results, I hereby declare Senator Solomon Adeola as the winner of the contest and the party’s governorship candidate for the 2027 election in Ogun State.”
In his acceptance remarks, Adeola pledged to build on the accomplishments of Governor Dapo Abiodun and to protect peace and unity within the APC, framing his nomination as an opportunity to continue the party’s work in government.
He also commended the governor for ensuring that the primary election was conducted peacefully and smoothly, saying the process was unprecedented in Ogun State’s political history.
“I never imagined the exercise would be this peaceful. By the grace of God, on May 29, 2027, we will witness a smooth transition of government,” Adeola said.
Responding, Governor Abiodun portrayed Adeola’s emergence as a sign of the trust APC members across the state place in his leadership ability. He added that the calm and orderly manner in which the primary was held amounted to a historic moment for Ogun State politics.
The governor noted that such a smooth exercise was unprecedented in the state’s more than 50-year political history, underscoring that the outcome reflected broad confidence in the direction the party intends to take toward the 2027 election.
