Trevor Noah Announces New South Africa Comedy Festival With Local Spotlight

Trevor Noah is stepping back into his home-country spotlight with a new, high-ambition comedy project designed to spark fresh energy in South Africa’s live entertainment scene—while putting local performers in the centre of the conversation.

The announcement landed as a surprise during a closed media briefing, where reporters were initially kept without details on what was about to be revealed. When the moment finally arrived, Noah took the stage with Eugene Khoza and Ntosh Madlingozi to explain what they’re calling a meaningful turning point for the country’s comedy world.

The initiative is officially named South Africa’s Festival of Comedy, and it’s being framed as far more than a one-off run of shows. With backing from Savanna, the team says the goal is to rebuild and reimagine stand-up comedy after years of disruption linked to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Eugene described it as a comeback with a forward-looking focus, saying, “It’s a revival. A renaissance of South Africa comedy. Making it what it was, while focusing on the future.”

Instead of leaning on a standard festival blueprint, the concept borrows from the sports world—treating comedy like a “national team.” The lineup will blend well-known names with up-and-coming voices, all curated to feel intentional rather than simply expansive.

Noah is set to serve as the lead curator, with Eugene acting as vice captain and Ntosh stepping in as coach. Together, they aim to grow and spotlight talent on a larger scale, giving performers more visibility while also strengthening the live comedy pipeline for audiences.

“Serving you the finest comedians that you may not know about yet. Giving them a platform,” the trio shared, positioning the project as both a celebration and a launchpad for new careers.

For Noah, the core mission is to pull people back toward live stand-up in a way that feels immersive, energising, and unmistakably South African. He added that the show experience will lean into physicality and big-screen scale, saying, “It’s all about stand up comedy. A physical comedy show… there is nothing like it. A grand scale of stand up comedy that leaves you laughing until you cannot breathe.”

The festival is expected to unfold across the country over several months, with activations, performances, and additional announcements building toward larger shows later in the year. The opening is scheduled for September at Pretoria’s SunBet Arena, before moving to Cape Town for another major showcase at GrandWest Casino.

Organisers also used the announcement to encourage audiences not to limit themselves to headline events. They urged fans to support the broader comedy ecosystem, from smaller venues to rising performers who are still finding their footing.

“Don’t wait for the big shows. Go to the smaller shows too. Support comedians. Make comedy funny again,” Eugene added.

Tickets for South Africa’s Festival of Comedy are expected to go on sale on 29 April, with the launch date seen as the beginning of what organisers hope will be a new era for local stand-up.

Noah also shared his excitement directly with fans, writing that South Africa “needs to laugh” and that with Savanna he’s “bringing just the team to do it.” He further described the event as Bafunny Bafunny, calling it South Africa’s National Team of Comedy, noting five shows across three cities in September 2026.

In a post dated April 27, 2026, Noah said he has Eugene Khoza confirmed and promised “many more local and international comedians” to be revealed in the run-up to the shows.
