His return to radio was met with great excitement from South Africans and the entire media fraternity after his long battle with cancer.
Whilst the public was gravely concerned with Gwala’s absence from the public eye, he found solace in knowing that his wife was with him every step of the way.
Speaking to Sunday Times, the media personality expressed gratitude towards his wife - former Miss South Africa, Peggy Sue Khumalo.
“She was the first person to force me to go to the hospital because I actually thought it was flu. From that point on she was in the hospital every single day. I don’t remember a day she didn’t come to see me in hospital.” But it had been extremely difficult for her. I think she understood the gravity of the situation more than I did.”
He also mentioned that cancer has brought his family closer regardless of the fact they've been extremely worried about him.
Gwala is currently in remission and temporarily back on the radio, he has explained that he isn’t completely out of the woods yet as it’s only been a month since his last operation.
