It is undisputed that the producer and Prince Kaybee’s third album, “Re Mmino, was the one of his best releases. The album had hit singles like “Gugulethu,” featuring Indlovukazi, Supta and afro Brothers, “Club Controller” with LaSoul Mates, featuring TNS and Zanda Zakuza, and the smash hit, “Fetch Your Life,” featuring Msaki. The album arguably carried the producer through his experimental releases like the “Crossover” EP, and subsequent releases from earlier this year.
All the singles he released this year as much as they had an impact, they failed to have a lasting impact. Take his single, “Hosh,” featuring Sir Trill. The song’s impact was due to the drama between him and Black Coffee, and Prince Kaybee popularizing the term. He then released the subsequent music video, which received more attention for the not-so-subtle jab directed at other nemesis, Cassper Nyovest. And we could talk about Prince Kaybee's song with Mampintsha, but it is probably better to not even touch on “As’Trende.”
But now it seems that Prince Kaybee has found his strongest contender for the ROTY title through the release of his most ambitious musical project to date; the “Project Hope, Season 1” album. The album was Prince Kaybee’s opportunity to give back, without necessarily “opening the industry.” The album consists of ten aspiring musicians that Prince Kaybee handpicked to be on the album and have their first actual studio experience.
The album has run away hits like “Tlogela Mapiano,” with Ruby Rose, “Indonda” with Thembisile Q, and his strongest fighter, “Yehla Moya” with Thalitha. The song not only is the first track on the album, but it is also the song that party goers have gravitated towards with the release of the album. With lockdown restrictions being eased Prince Kaybee has been able to see the reaction of live audiences to the song and “Yehle Moya” is clearly leading.
Now it seems that Prince Kaybee is working towards letting the song be his entry for ROTY. His latest posts have had the song as their soundtrack. And even social media users have come around to the project through the DJ promoting the single. Now we wait until December to know if his efforts were worth it.
