The Woman King Is Finally Here

The Woman King starring an exceptional lead female cast is now screening in cinemas across South Africa. The premiere took place at the Mall of Africa in Johannesburg, Wednesday night. Some of the cast members in attendance included Thuso Mbedu, John Boyega and Siv Ngesi. As well as former Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi who made her film dΓ©but in the Woman King.  Local celebs who also joined in on the celebratory evening included Siphesihle Ndaba, Miss Supranational Lalela Mswane, Boity Thulo and Minnie Dlamini just to name a few. 

The historical drama is inspired by true events as it tells the story of an all-female warrior unit who protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s. It also narrates General Nanisca (played by Viola Davis) journey as she inspires the King to face their enemies, who are determined to destroy their way of life.

The film is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and produced by multi award-winning actress, Viola Davis who also stars in the Woman King. The team shot the film between October 2021 - March 2022 in South Africa. In an interview with News24, the American award-winning film director and screenwriter expressed that filming the history epic in South Africa was the perfect backdrop for the film's world. She also praises Thuso who stole the show as well as the rest of the stellar cast and crew.

The movie evokes so many emotions and grabs your attention from the start to the very end. The star-studded cast delivered incredible performances, but Thuso Mbedu really does steal the show with her raw emotion and acting skills
