The Woman King has been the talk of the town ahead of its global release and South African premiere in cinemas on Friday, 30 September 2022. The movie stars Thuso Mbedu who acts alongside Viola Davis , John Boyega, Lashana Lynch and Hero Fienness Tiffin. The blockbuster was filmed in South Africa and is set in the period of 1800’s where an all-woman warrior unit fights to safeguard the West African kingdom of Dahomey and their dignity . The movie also stars local actresses and actors like Makgosto M, Masali Baduza, Sivuyile Ngesi and former Miss Universe, Zozibini Tunzi

In its first week, ‘The Woman King’ directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and produced by Academcy Award winning Viola Davis dominated the Box Office and exceeded gross expectations as it made over $19 million in its opening weekend.

The historical action-packed film inspired by true events continues to be praised and receive positive reviews. The movie is easily one of the top blockbusters of the year but its Thuso Mbedu powerful presence that has left jaws dropping. The South African actress is not new to the scene in Hollywood as she has received significant success over the past two years. Thuso Mbedu stars as Nawi in the film.

Predictions are that Mbedu stands a good chance of being nominated for an Oscar based on her role in ‘The Woman King’. This would solidify her reign and follow suit of the trajectory of her already successful acting career. Earlier this year she took home the award for the Best Female Performance in a New Scripted Series, at the 37th Film Independent Spirit Awards. Mbedu role in ‘The Underground Railroad showcased her acting skills. Not only did she take home the award but also received multiple nods for this role.

The obsession towards 'The Woman King' is evident. American singer, SZA made sure to watch the movie and wrote on Twitter "JERSEY I BOUGHT OUT THE THEATER TO SEE THE WOMAN KING TODAY FOR FREE AT 5:30 PM!! PLEASE GO SEEE ITTTT !"
