On Saturday, 16 October 2021, a viral video featuring a female DJ in a crop top, sagging jeans and G-string straps showing went viral on social media. That video was the introduction of what will be one of the biggest stars to come out of COVID-19 and out of the Amapiano genre, and that artist was Uncle Waffles. Whose real name is Lungelihle Zwane.
Today marks exactly a year since the alleged 30-minute set that she was not meant to play, but became her biggest blessing. Taking to social media, Uncle Waffles, who has had a tumultuous relationship with Twitter went on to thank all the fans and support she has received.
At the time, the producer-DJ had a four-time platinum certified single with Tanzania and a single EP titled Red Dragon. Despite the success of her debut EP, Uncle Waffles did not rest on her laurels. This was as there was a demand for the producer-DJ to release her debut album.
While she did not go ahead and release an album, she did offer her fans a second project with the release of her sophomore EP titled Asylum. In light of the release of the single and EP, Uncle Waffles has shared the inspiration behind the Asylum.
Uncle Waffles on Inspiration for Asylum
Ahead of the official release of her sophomore EP, Uncle Waffles had already started to create anticipation by playing the then-unofficial lead single of the album Yahyuppiyah, which features Pcee, Eeque and Chley. The single is already a runaway hit on the streets but was officially released along with the EP.
Following the official release of the single and EP, Uncle Waffles has taken to her social media to explain the inspiration behind this EP by sharing that:
“Asylum- this project is a representation of how I felt in my mind trying to grasp an industry I was blessed to be thrown in, an artistic portrayal of emotions and feelings, of growth, highs and lows and all the in-betweens. It’s been a journey creating something I love.”
Moreover, she then expressed that the release of the EP is only the first part of the promotional rollout which suggests that there are more parts to the EP to be released later this year.
In light of the EP’s release music lovers have taken to social media to share which song from the album they believe is their current favourite. However, fans seem more impressed by the fact that Uncle Waffles and Tony Duardo are the combo that no one knew they needed.
This is as Uncle Waffles and Tony Duardo were the producers behind Tanzania. Now it seems that the duo has done it again on this album as they have again produced hits on this projects including Yahyuppiyah, Angry Birds, Morocco and Babiee. Three of those songs are considered to be three of the best singles from the entire project.
