Although Mam' Ruby, whose real life name is Silindile Nondangala was dumped by Mzansi’s most popular soapie, Generations, it seems as if she's still keen to channel the spirit of her on-screen character. Mam' Ruby had been a popular fixture on the soapie. Amongst her most notable story arcs on the show was the period in time when she dated a man dramatically younger than she was, also known as dating a Ben 10.
At the Icons Cultural Festival last week, Silindile channeled her inner cougar when she hollered at maskandi artist Khuzani Mpungose, “Get off that stage, Khuzani, and come here because I want to kiss you, my Ben 10!”
At the show in Clermont, Durban where Silindile was the MC, she shocked the audience by giving Khuzani a kiss.
He had recently performed and left the fans – particularly the women – shouting for more.
The astonished vocalist was reluctant to engage with Silindile but she was having none of it. “Are you scared of me?” she asked Khuzani and then she kissed him on the cheek while he closed his eyes.
The audience cherished it. Gentlemen whistled loudly and fans applauded.
But Mam' Ruby wasn't done.
She asked the DJ to close down the music, made that big appearance and said: “Wow! I enjoyed kissing this young handsome boy.”
“You know I go for Ben 10s, ne?” she added.
“They are humble and understanding. Not like our peers.”
Then she gave the older women some advice.
“Let me tell you, people will criticize you when you date a younger person but don’t listen to them. When a Ben 10 comes your way, just say yes,” she said.
Some members of the crowd were not exactly happy at this point of her speech
“I’m not impressed with Mam Ruby’s behaviour,” one fan, Sibahle Ndlovu told Daily Sun. “She just wanted attention. There are children in the audience and she should have behaved better than that. But all she wants is to be in the newspapers so she encourages women to date boys.”
Later Khuzani said he does not date older women.
“I will never go for sugar mamas. I see them as my mothers or my elder sisters,” he said.
“It’s not good for the youth to go after money by dating sugar mamas.”
